This Edwardian brick cottage was once home to writer J.R.R. Tolkein who wrote about the nearby river Wang in Lord of the Rings and painter Stanley Spencer stayed there for holidays and trips to a local beach which appears in a series of his paintings. More recently musician Jaikai of Jamiroquai was a resident and continuing this artistic lineage, it is now home to painters Jenny Creasy and Tony Casement. The decoration of the interiors was influenced by Matisse whose style emphasised intense colour and strong lines and a love of Eastern and African art.
