Jo Sweeting, a sculptor and letter carver, and her husband Phil, a bespoke
picture framer, live in a Victorian terraced house in Brighton, East Sussex with their three sons George, 13, Harvey, 11, and Joseph, 7. Jo runs Jo Sweeting Sculpture, working on commissions and her own designs from a studio at the bottom of the garden, where she also teaches letter carving, sculpture, wreath making, pumpkin carving and drawing.
For Jo Sweeting, working from home is a great way to combine her career with the demands of bringing up children – and the result is a warm, welcoming family home which doubles as a living and breathing gallery of Jo's work. “The house is also my inspiration,” she says. “I think of it as a giant sketchbook,” she says. “I'm forever creating little still lifes in corners or on shelves, then the shapes and colour contrasts give me ideas for my drawings and carvings.”
Even from the outside you can tell that a creative couple own the house. Phil hand mixed the subtle French grey paint shade for the front door, Jo carved the stone house number, and the planting in the front garden was chosen to give sculptural botanical shapes that Jo can use in her work.
