As house-hunting briefs go it wasn't too unusual, 'find a home big
enough for the family'. However for Marina and Russell Shellard, who at
the time had six children between them, ranging from 13 to 21 years
old, this meant finding quite a large house - and in an area of West
Sussex where it can be hard to unearth a property bargain. Luckily they
were shown a 17th century working farm in need of a complete refit,
with a 14th century milking shed that just screamed ?perfect for a barn
'We knew we'd get planning permission because the barn was already
attached to the house,' says Marina. This was really important,
because since the farmhouse itself is Grade II listed we also knew we
wouldn't be able to change the layout of that at all.'
Things moved very quickly and with the sale completed in June 2008,
the family moved into rented accommodation nearby while Russell got
to work updating the interior of the farmhouse.
