PE099: Carving a Niche
Photos: Polly Eltes / Narratives
Text & Styling: Jane Graining / Narratives

Tracey, her partner, Paul, and their small team of craftsmen are the people behind Spencer and Richman, the company that hand-carves exquisite stone fireplaces in a workshop on the Somerset Levels. Design is at the heart of the business, it helps that the couple are both artists: Tracey has a masters degree in textiles and Paul trained as a painter before, by chance, he visited a carver’s workshop and fell in love with the romance of carving stone. Paul is now regarded as one of the finest stone carvers in the country.
There’s a warm creative buzz in their house with children’s art on the walls alongside sketches and paintings by Paul, and fine casts and carvings on tables and windowsills.
