As an interior designer, Melissa Lee is no stranger to a decorative challenge, and her tiny west London cottage was certainly that. When she bought it, the floors were covered in old lino and the garden was so dwarfed by conifers that she didn’t realise it housed a small stone shed. Melissa’s approach was to keep the cottage’s small rooms rather than make the ground floor open plan; instead, she ‘opened up’ the spaces visually, using pale colours and an abundance of mirrors. To this she has added jolts of high voltage hues: fuchsia pink, pillar box red and lime green, all of which serve to add a contemporary edge to her treasured antique finds. ‘I wanted a cottage feel that was neither frilly not fussy,’ she notes.
