Our cottage may be small - but it’s perfect for us!’
Liz Hoad and her husband Tim have used every inch of space - including
their delightful garden - to create a warm and welcoming country home.
INTERIOR INSPIRATION ‘We’ve thought beyond the walls of the cottage
to make our home work to maximum advantage: the patio is in constant use
as an outdoor room in the summer, and when guests descend, we even use
the summerhouse as an extra bedroom! Our next plan is to install a
shepherd’s hut in the garden for even more accommodation - essential as our
family continues to expand!’
‘Because the cottage is small, we’ve deliberately kept the colours light and
soft to stop it feeling dark or oppressive. The only room that differs in that
approach is the sitting room - part of the original cottage: the old stone walls
in here are so characterful, we didn’t want to plaster over them. This room is
mainly used in winter evenings anyway though, so being darker didn’t
matter - if anything it makes the room cosier, especially when we light the
woodburner. We also decided not to have carpets in this room, partly
because we love the original Purbeck stone flags, but also because it means
when the grandchildren visit, there’s no worry about mess or spills!
I’ve used pretty country-style fabrics for soft furnishings - mainly in gentle
shades of pink and aqua - throughout, though I love the cheerful red touches
in the kitchen which work so well with the cream country-style decor.’
