Period The property was built in the 17th century and was a working farm until around 50 years ago; it was originally divided into a farmhouse, stable and cattle block, hay and grain store, plus three main outbuildings: an old piggery, a blacksmith’s and a bakery (in the last few years these outbuildings have been converted into self-contained cottages). It was opened as a museum in the 1970s until being turned into a B&B business in the 1990s. The current owners have since renovated the farmhouse to create their new family home. Celine has embraced the revamp of the interior, updating the decorating schemes in each room to complement the warm woody tones of exposed beams and rafters, using a pallete of French and charcoal greys, off whites and the odd shot of vibrant colour, such as fuchsia and pillar box red. She has also selected a combination of traditional, contemporary and retro pendant lights and lamps to create interest and add a warm and welcoming glow. Kitchens and bathrooms, meanwhile, have been given the rustic look with local hand made blue and white tiles. ‘To keep the costs down, I’ve gone for seconds... or even thirds,’ admits Celine,
‘rather than the perfect ones. I think it adds to the charm anyway.’ Along the way, Celine has discovered that she has inherited her ability for finding wonderful furniture and unusual objects from her mother, so the pair have amassed vast amounts of kitchenalia, old hardbacks, paperbacks, comics and magazines, enamelware, framed prints, portraiture and mirrors, enough to fill the house many times over.
The farmhouse and the B&B have a total of 9 bedrooms, each of the B&B rooms has an en suite bath or shower room. The family has a private open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting room; guests have use of a small kitchenette/dining/sitting room as well as a larger kitchen/breakfast/dining room.
