After 20 years of holidaying in the Algarve, Rupert and Andrew found a restored 200-year-old former girl’s school full of traditional character to call home. It started as a holiday romance, a love affair with a quiet stretch of the Algarve where Portugal meets the Spanish border. However, Andrew Roberts and Rupert Kirby were finding it harder to get on the plane home after each visit so in 2005 they decided it was time to say goodbye to London life and look for a new home in Portugal. ‘This house was the last one we saw on the last day of looking,’ says Andrew. ‘As soon as we walked in we knew it was exactly what we wanted.’ They both dreamed of an old property with lots of character, but did not relish the idea of a huge renovation project. Luckily a developer had already worked his magic, transforming a derelict wreck with the help of local artisan craftsmen who recreated the traditional touches, like the ironwork grills over the downstairs doors that allow windows onto the street to be left open to welcome in cooling breezes on hot summer days. He also fitted modern bathrooms and a new kitchen in keeping with the traditional Portuguese style of poured concrete cupboard
