Preserving the provenance and integrity of a family home, designed and built as a country retreat for the Lillywhite family of cricket and sport shop notoriety, could for many seem a daunting task. For Fiona Lawrenson, three times Gold Medal Winner at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and more recent founder of Three Gates Gallery, it has proved the perfect space to indulge her passion for both interiors and gardens.
The Haslemere house situated in a quiet verdant lane, was built in 1929, when railway links to London greatly improved access to the town and transformed the area into a fashionable spot for wealthy Londoners seeking a weekend escape. With young children, Fiona and Colin Lawrenson had been looking for a characterful country home with height, space and privacy. Owned by only three families, the Lawrenson’s were attracted to the elegant Arts and Crafts architecture, with its stylish brickwork, ornate windows and prolific architectural detailing. ‘The imposing inner hallway sold it to us both as we walked in - it reminded me of my childhood home,’ says Fiona.
